General Description and Classification Standards

The individual in this position is responsible for investigating criminal, traffic, and civil cases for the Office of the City Solicitor. Investigation duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting assigned attorneys and staff in the prosecution of defendants in court by providing conducting, detailing and analyzing evidence for cases. This is a seasoned professional, capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the investigation profession.

Supervision Received Works under supervision and may work with others on the completion of assigned tasks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

Investigates criminal, traffic, driving under the influence, and code enforcement cases and prepares investigative reports Collects evidence to support court cases. Performs site investigations on the scenes where and incidents, accidents, or crimes took place and collect evidence. Subpoena witnesses and law enforcement officers for trial and hearings. Reviews, investigates, evaluates, and prepares investigation reports on new and on-going cases Prepares and serves subpoenas and warrants. Performs arrests on defendants who have outstanding warrants in the Municipal Court and arranges transportation to designated agencies. Conducts interviews of witnesses and other individuals involved in the investigation of a case and prepares a summary of data findings when requested. Examines and reviews documents to establish facts and establish authenticity of data. Maybe required to testify as needed. Locates and interviews witnesses, citizens, law enforcement officers, and others necessary to verify fact findings indicating a violation of the law; communicates with attorneys, supervisors, managers, and others to review findings and otherwise provide information for plea recommendations; maintains on-going relationships with law enforcement agencies. Operates a computer to complete daily task; and operates city issued vehicle(s) in an effective and efficient manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list. In-depth knowledge of investigation concepts, processes and tools of the profession; knowledge of policies and procedures for cases and programs knowledge of law enforcement terminology used within the department and other law enforcement agencies. Ability to carry out all typical investigation assignments; ability to train others; ability to build effective relationships; ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to department and/or governmental regulations; ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques necessary in the completion of daily assignments.
